Many organizations, both public agencies and non-profits, are seeking greater public input and participation in their activities as well as to more effectively get their messages out to the public. We became aware this month of several new opportunities for people to get involved in making their community, state, and nation a better place and we would like to share these opportunities with you. They range from prominent positions in growing organizations that will give you the opportunity for continuing input to opportunities that are only asking that you take a little bit of your time to participate in a forum or write an e-mail so that these organizations can more effectively focus on the issues that are of most concern to the public. NYS Department of Health Bureau of Early Intervention Hearings for Proposed Rule Making on Amendments to Early Intervention Program (Amendments of Subpart 69-4 of Title 10 NYCRR) The Department will be holding public hearings to receive public comment on the notice of proposed rulemaking on the following dates. Please note that the dates, times and locations of the hearings have changed from those listed in the State Register.

CBVH public forums on vocational rehabilitation The New York State Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH) and the State Rehabilitation Council are developing the State Plan for Vocational Rehabilitation and Supported Services for Federal Fiscal Year 2011. To assist with this, they will be holding three public forums on how CBVH can improve vocational rehabilitation and supported employment services.
More details on the forums as well as dates and times are available on the Office of Children and Family Services webpage (OCFS) at: ODEP Announces Listening Sessions Schedule From January through March the U.S. Department of Labor's (DOL) Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and its federal partners will hold a series of six Listening Sessions across the country. These sessions will provide an opportunity for members of the public to provide input to senior federal officials on their ideas for more effective ways to employ women, Veterans and minorities with disabilities, and what is currently working in their communities to increase employment among people with disabilities. Dates and locations for the listening sessions are available on ODEP’s web site. The National Association of Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) and the Alliance for Full Participation (AFP) are Seeking Input from Direct Support Professionals The NADSP is looking for input from direct support professionals to assist in their efforts to increase employment for people with disabilities. The following statement from the NADSP explains what they are looking for and how you can help. You may be aware that the NADSP is fully involved in a national effort to increase employment for people with IDD. It is called the Alliance for Full Participation. Check it out at www.allianceforfullparticipation.org/public/. We are at the table with the other national organizations related to disability such as The Arc, UCP, APSE, the Council, ANCOR, AAIDD, Autism Society of American, and others. The goal is to double the current 22% employment rate for people with IDD. Right now, I am looking for some quotes from direct support professionals. I’d like you to send me your thoughts about the importance of employment for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. You may have some opinions or some experiences. Try and put it into a couple of sentences. We are looking for quotes from the field that we can use in brochures and other marketing. DSPANYS Seeking Nominations for Board of Directors DSPANYS is calling for nominations to their Board of Directors and is seeking dedicated direct support professionals and/or front line supervisors to fill this roll. They are seeking nominations for President, First Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and six Regional Vice Presidents. Nominations should be sent by e-mail no later than February 15, 2010. Study on participation in the Workplace for People with Mobility Disabilities Seeking Participants Claire Yang, OTD, at the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access, Georgia Institute of Technology, is currently seeking full-time employees who have a mobility disability to take part in a study that will examine their participation in the workplace. Qualifications to Participate: Must hold a full-time job (>50% FTE) and work in an office environment (which can include educational settings). 8/9/10 - Chilodrens Issues Committee Meeting *Notice* Open Government and the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC). All DDPC meetings are held in Albany, NY unless otherwise noted. Under law, the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC) meetings and DDPC Standing Committee meetings are open meetings. If the public wants to attend, they can attend as observers. Participants may be asked to leave during breaks in the deliberations and when the meeting goes into executive session. If more information, please contact the DDPC directly. People First Language The DDPC strictly adheres to and encourages the use of people first language. However you may note that in some articles/stories appearing in the E-Bulletin the language used is not always entirely people first.
