Many organizations, both public agencies and non-profits, are seeking greater public input and participation in their activities as well as to more effectively get their messages out to the public. We became aware this month of several new opportunities for people to get involved in making their community, state, and nation a better place and we would like to share these opportunities with you. They range from prominent positions in growing organizations that will give you the opportunity for continuing input to opportunities that are only asking that you take a little bit of your time to participate in a forum or write an e-mail so that these organizations can more effectively focus on the issues that are of most concern to the public.

ODEP Announces Listening Sessions Schedule

From January through March the U.S. Department of Labor's (DOL) Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and its federal partners will hold a series of six Listening Sessions across the country. These sessions will provide an opportunity for members of the public to provide input to senior federal officials on their ideas for more effective ways to employ women, Veterans and minorities with disabilities, and what is currently working in their communities to increase employment among people with disabilities.

The National Association of Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) and the Alliance for Full Participation (AFP) are Seeking Input from Direct Support Professionals

The NADSP is looking for input from direct support professionals to assist in their efforts to increase employment for people with disabilities. The following statement from the NADSP explains what they are looking for and how you can help.

You may be aware that the NADSP is fully involved in a national effort to increase employment for people with IDD. It is called the Alliance for Full Participation. Check it out at www.allianceforfullparticipation.org/public/. We are at the table with the other national organizations related to disability such as The Arc, UCP, APSE, the Council, ANCOR, AAIDD, Autism Society of American, and others. The goal is to double the current 22% employment rate for people with IDD. Right now, I am looking for some quotes from direct support professionals. I’d like you to send me your thoughts about the importance of employment for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. You may have some opinions or some experiences. Try and put it into a couple of sentences. We are looking for quotes from the field that we can use in brochures and other marketing. I hope to hear from many of you so that direct support professionals are well represented in the campaign. You can email me directly at lburck@nadsp.org.
