Parent to Parent of New York State and DSPANYS are pleased to recognize the following eight direct support professionals for "making a difference for people with disabilities and their families" by awarding our first Difference Maker Recognition Awards to:

Kathy Napier a direct support professional from Pavillion, NY was nominated by Ms. Ann Scherff, who wrote that Kathy is a true life-long learner and always takes the initiative to problem solve. Kathy's work has allowed Mrs. Scherff's sons grow and become more involved in their communities.

Brian Hart, a direct support professional from Rochester, NY was nominated by Ms. Kim Clark who wrote that Brian was a compassionate person with a quiet sense of humor who always welcomes her family when they come to visit. The kindness and respect that Brian always shows to everyone involved in her son's life are qualities that every direct support professional should emulate.

Juan Pena, a direct support professional from Tarrytown, NY was nominated by Mrs. Constance DeBerry who told us that Juan is incredibly committed to his profession and is always willing to help the family address their concerns and answer the smallest of questions.

Tiffany Dunn, a direct support professional from Elmsford, NY was nominated by Ms. Paula Manzueta who told us that Tiffany is helping her daughter to be more involved in her community by volunteering in activities that are important to her. Tiffany has helped Paula's daughter to express herself as the gifted young woman that she has become.

Stephanie Juan, another direct support professional from Elmsford, NY was nominated by Ms. Francisca Alcantara who told us that Stephanie was helping her son be an active community member and that her son deeply enjoys the time that they spend together.

Dan Baxter, a direct support professional from Troy, NY was nominated by Ms. Eileen Berner who told us that she can go to sleep at night not worrying about her brother's safety because she knows that he is in good hands with Dan. She also told us that Dan's supports and serves her brother as if he were his own family member.

Sean Houlihan, a direct support professional from Rochester, NY was nominated by Ms. Geraldine Drasch for making a huge difference in her son's life.

Lastly, all of the direct support professionals who work at Goodburlet Road in Henrietta, NY - that is operated by Heritage Christian Services were nominated by Pat Marshall-Cowden who told us that her daughter's life was transformed when she moved into her new home. Because of this participation, she now has friends, a social life and many fun, interesting & meaningful things to do. Pat told us about the change in her daughter's ability to be more independent and credits this to the dedication of the direct support professionals who work with her every day.

Please join us in congratulating our winners. Each of them will receive a gift from Parent to Parent of New York State and receive a free one year's membership to the Direct Support Professional Alliance of New York State (DSPANYS) & the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals (NADSP).
