Preliminary Plans and Public Comment Period on the DSM-V by the American Psychiatric Association The following link(s) will open in one new tab or window. Should you have any questions regarding this article, please follow the specific contact information provided. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is set to be published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in May 2013. The DSM provides the standard criteria for the classification of conditions within the United States so the proposed changes may have wide ranging effects. These revisions are being made with a goal of updating diagnoses to reflect advancements in scientific and clinical knowledge which will assist in making diagnoses more accurate, valid, and clinically useful. A preliminary plan for the changes has been posted and will be open for public comment until April 20, 2010. The APA is asking for people or family members affected by a mental disorder, clinicians, researchers, and administrators to read over and give their input on the proposed changes. The introduction page for the draft revisions and public comment can be found at: www.dsm5.org/Pages/Default.aspx Subjects of particular interest may be the section on “disorders usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood, or adolescence,” which includes autism spectrum disorders, at: www.dsm5.org/PROPOSEDREVISIONS/Pages/InfancyChildhoodAdolescence.aspx and the section on the proposed revision changing “Mental Retardation” to “Intellectual Disability” and new diagnostic criteria to replace IQ measures: www.dsm5.org/ProposedRevisions/Pages/proposedrevision.aspx?rid=384#.
